IMI plc's Board and Executive visited a number of IMI Critical businesses over a period of six months, to see upgraded facilities and progress of Lean in Germany, Korea and Italy.
The Board, led by CEO Mark Selway, met at IMI Z&J Germany's offices in Duren. The IMI Executive toured the refurbished site, which has been the subject of a £8.9m upgrade over the last three years to create a world-class manufacturing facility. This included refurbished manufacturing halls, incorporating Lean layouts to make the plant more efficient and productive, improved offices and a new technical training centre, which provides a customer-facing presentation area.
At IMI Orton in Italy in October, the Board, led by the Chairman Lord Smith, had a chance to see the plant improvements and a range of Lean production techniques in action.
During the visit, Board members viewed a Kaizen board, a Lean technique which aims to improve productivity and efficiency by introducing standardised processes. A number of projects were shown, including a prototype valve assembly and a new testing device for large valves.
Raoul Gatti, Managing Director explained to the Board a new design of an adaptable workstation, which can be adjusted for use with different sized valves, and which optimises safety, speed and efficiency for machining operations.
The Chairman, Lord Smith and Roy Twite, Divisional Managing Director visited IMI Critical Korea and China to see the great progress made. This was reinforced with the IMI Critical Korea plant attaining 82% in its Lean assessment in November. The Chairman also recognised the Korean team for the awards received in 2017, including being named Supplier of the Year by several global customers. During the trip to Korea & China Lord Smith and Roy joined meetings with strategic customers, Shanghai Electric and Samsung.
